Saturday Jan 30, coaches of L'Athletique d'Haiti began the healing and re-building process by calling a community meeting among the youth and their families. HUNDREDS of participants came to the fields, received meals, met together and..... played! Leaders were overwhelmed by the attendance and reported a feeling of releif and excitement in the air. They say the youth have been traumatized by the events and need an opportunity to play more than ever.
Once again, SHLF is proud to support L'Athletique D'Haiti as they continue to demonstrate their outstanding leadership and their invaluable role in the community both on and off the field.

Dear Friends,
We have kept regular contact with L’Athletique D’Haiti (LADH) as they respond to the Earthquake crisis, assess the damages and begin to rebuild themselves and their community. Needless to say, the programme, staff and students face enormous challenges as they endeavour to recover from this most devastating tragedy. That said, LADH has once again showed their courage and resolve and are playing a crucial role in responding to the needs of those affected by the quake.
International Liaison Laura Anduze offers us a glimpse of what LADH is currently facing, “L'Athletique d'Haiti (LADH) is stretched on resources at present given that a big part of the infrastructure (walls, classrooms and offices) have been damaged by the earthquake, and that the program has the additional burden of feeding the regular children plus their families plus some refugees that we have allowed to camp in our fields.
Approximately 150 program participants have been attending the facilities since last week, some with their families. As of Thursday (Jan 21) we had 50 families camping on site full-time. They are being provided with food and water and are being sheltered by self-made or donated tents”.
Program Director Boby Duval has further been leading relief efforts throughout Port-Au-Prince. Given his extensive knowledge of the city, he has lent his expertise to help Doctors without Borders reach the most difficult and needy parts of the city since the first days of the earthquake. He assisted them in getting to sites throughout Port-Au-Prince and they have subsequently cared for the injured at the LADH site as well. In addition, coolers, tents, food and hygiene supplies have been sent to LADH from Puerto Rice and Florida as part of larger distributions.
Staff and community members have collected bricks and other debris from the concrete walls surrounding the soccer fields to build a secure structure around the kitchen in order to preserve order during food distributions.
As anticipated, the people involved with LADH are stepping well above and beyond the call of duty to respond to the community during times of need; again reinforcing the importance of community-based programs. The number of youth and families that came to the facilities in the wake of the Earthquake demonstrates for us how many consider it a safe and vital place. Well beyond sports and tutoring, LADH is providing leadership in a time of crisis, a safe place for those who need it most and a vision for the way forward.
We congratulate their courage in responding to this tragedy, are confident that they will continue and hopeful that over time Haiti will be stronger and better off than ever before.
Best regards,
MaryAnn Hartley

Hello Friends and Supporters,
As you all know, Port-Au-Prince, Haiti and its surrounding areas are facing a natural disaster of unprecedented proportion - a magnitude 7.0 earthquake within 10 miles of the city centre.
L’Athlétique Haiti, our Haitian partners, work with over 1,500 youth and their families in Cité de Soleil, the largest slum in the country, where hundreds of thousands of the poorest Haitians live with no running water, no sewage systems, and no electricity. We have heard from Boby Duval, leader and founder of L’Athletique Haiti, to say that the effects on the youth, families and facilities have yet to be determined but are projected to be catastrophic. Cité de Soleil has been hit particularly hard and continues to be distressingly difficult to access given the poor infrastructure in the slum.
People around the world have been moved by the images from Haiti after this most recent tragedy and many have asked how they can help. Having spent several months there myself, I continue to be devastated by how much one country and its people have had to endure - environmental degradation, natural disasters, occupation, political turmoil and misrule. It is un-thinkable; yet it is true.
The Strachan Hartley Legacy Foundation is committed to establishing long-term partners with real impact in communities that need it most. L’Athlétique Haiti has an 8 year history of outstanding and tangible impact in Cité de Soleil through civil unrest, hurricanes and other obstacles. They WILL rise to serve the needs of the youth and families affected directly by the earthquake both during and in the wake of this tragedy and we are committed to support them to the best of our ability.
We encourage everyone to take an interest and do their part in Haiti. For those looking to make a difference through L'Athletique Haiti and their after-school sports and education programs, we will be accepting donations ear-marked to Haiti with a guarantee that any funds raised will go directly to the youth in Cité de Soleil as best needed. We will update the webpage and donors as we hear from Boby and his team about the impact on the L’Athletique Haiti family and keep them in our thoughts and prayers.

You can note "Haiti" in the donation comment box. Be assured that any donations earmarked for this purpose will reach those in Haiti and thank you so much for your willingness to make a difference.
We thank you again for your willingness to make a difference.
Sincerely,
Aimee-Noel and the Strachan Hartley Legacy Foundation
