In true ‘make a difference’ spirit, over 45 young girls rose at the crack of dawn on a Monday morning to trek 65 kilometres across Montréal. In 2007, inspired by the legendary journey of Terry Fox and his Marathon of Hope, students at the all-girls Villa Sainte Marcelline school in Montréal chose to create the Course VSM as an annual event to raise money for a local charity. This year, the girls selected to race across the city to raise money for the Strachan Hartley Legacy Foundation. On this day, more than 45 youngsters ran, walked, biked and roller-bladed East-West across Montréal, raising over $4,000 for youth who need it most.
In the spirit of youth-to-youth giving, funds raised from this event will be directed towards providing sports and education programs for under-privileged youth in Montréal through the Westhaven Community Centre. Funds raised from Course VSM will benefit Montréal youth who currently do not have access to organized sports. Due to the efforts of these girls and their friends and families, teens of their same age in the Westhaven-Elmhurst area of Notre-Dame-de Grace will benefit from both a soccer and basketball league for the first time ever in their neighbourhood.
Humbled by their benevolence, the SHLF applauds the efforts of these young ladies for their commitment to making a difference in the world and look forward to you becoming the leaders of tomorrow. We hope you enjoyed a wonderful adventure and promise to honour your service to the community to the very best of our ability.
