Every year, a post-secondary scholarship is awarded to the Handsworth graduate who best displays academic, athletic and community leadership. For the first time since the scholarship was created in 2008, the 2011 award winner was a young man!

Will Kershaw has been described by one of his teachers as "Simply,he is one of the nicest, happiest kids I have had the pleasure to teach! Definitely someone who seems to get a lot of joy out of life... I have enjoyed having such a positive, caring individual in my classroom for the past 3 years. He is obviously the product of a loving family."

In addition to being a student that teachers love to have in their classrooms, he excels academically and maintained honour roll status every term since Grade 8, including a 90% average in his Grade 12 year.  All the while he contributed enormously to the overall school culture and participating in leadership roles including the Grad Council, organizing Christmas hampers for the Open Door Foundation, volunteering at the Harvest Project and running the CIBC Run for the Cure and Strachan Hartley Legacy Run (in which he won his age category).

With respect to athletics, Will is a true testament to team spirit and someone who strives to get the most out of life. He partcipated in basketball, football, rugby, lacrosse and soccer, as a captain in most cases.

One of his coaches shared his favourite memory of the year:

"During the HSBC (basketball) tournament we were playing Sir Charles Tupper - he went up against a kid who was 7 feet tall. But he only knows one way to play - go hard to the hoop. So, when he got the ball.....he went hard to the hoop and got stuffed. He got the ball again....and did the same thing with the same result. This probably happened 5 or 6 times before he stopped doing it, realizing that it wasn't going to work. This speaks to his resolve to succeed and to persevere no matter what.'

Congratulations Will on your contribution to the school and community! We wish you all the best in your future endeavours and consider you a part of the SHLF extended family.
